Apr. 4, 2024, Treaty No. 1 Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Members of the downtown business community came together to hear from Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) Grand Chief Cathy Merrick to learn how to work together to build understanding and create social, economic, political and cultural cohesion in the heart of the city.
Grand Chief Merrick discussed key factors driving the urbanization of First Nations people in downtown Winnipeg. Grand Chief Merrick also shared insights on how the business community can meaningfully advance reconciliation and support the education and training of Indigenous individuals to ensure they have equal opportunities in the workforce.
“As our downtown continues to transform, we’re seeing social and economic reconciliation in action,” says Kate Fenske, CEO of Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “At the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ we are focused on our reconciliation journey and are grateful for partners like AMC to work together to build a more vibrant and inclusive downtown for everyone.”
Recently, the city has seen significant steps towards reconciliation through the transfer and sale of key downtown properties to Indigenous organizations, including the Southern Chiefs’ Organization’s purchase and redevelopment of the former Hudson’s Bay building and the Manitoba Métis Federation’s development of the former BMO building at Portage and Main as well as relocation of MMF offices to 200 Main.
“We’re witnessing a transformation in downtown Winnipeg with these projects that create opportunities, reclaim history, promote First Nation success and more,” says Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs. “Downtown is a place for everyone and seeing the engaged businesses who are ready to learn more in the spirit of reconciliation is encouraging.”
Today’s event with Grand Chief Cathy Merrick was the third event in the Downtown Speaker Series, where Downtown Winnipeg BIZ members hear from experts and decision-makers who share insights and plans to address the issues facing downtown. Previously, BIZ members heard from Mayor Scott Gillingham and Premier Wab Kinew on downtown topics, including safety and priorities for revitalizing downtown.
Over 60 representatives from downtown businesses attended today’s Downtown Speaker Series event. Event attendees represented various sectors, including hospitality, real estate, retail, insurance and other professional services.
Downtown Speaker Series concluded with networking and refreshments to encourage the downtown business community to continue the conversation and make meaningful connections.
