YEAR OF THE MONKEY: NEW BANNERS TO BE INSTALLED TOMORROW IN CHINATOWN
Downtown Winnipeg, Chinatown – On Friday, Winnipeggers will see new banners climbing up the poles of Chinatown in celebration of the Year of the Monkey.
The banner installations will start at 9 AM on King Street and jump their way down Main Street, Princess Street, Logan Avenue and James Avenue. In collaboration with the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ has been displaying banners since 1991 as a way-finding mechanism and celebration of downtown culture.
“The banner competition is a wonderful tradition that provides local artists with the opportunity to showcase their talent and enhance Chinatown’s vibrant streetscape,” says Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.
This year’s competition winner is Zhiling Liu, a Graphic Design student studying at the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology.
“I was very happy to hear my design was chosen,” says Liu. “Every day since hearing the news my husband and I have been walking around Chinatown to see if my banners are up. I’m excited to tell all my family and friends they’ll be going up on Friday!”
Liu’s design was jury-selected out of 34 entries for its strong visually artistic, symbolic and engaging image. Her banner design combined a traditional bold red paper-cut style monkey with an elegant water-colour background, encapsulating the lively and adventurous characteristics of the Year.
