Winnipeg’s Fastest Cyclist

August 14, 2012

Just in time for the annual Ciclovia event, that challenges cyclists, runners, pedestrians and more to enjoy a network of car-free streets that lead to Broadway’s festival activities on September 9th, 2012

Downtown Winnipeg – Three very proud Winnipeggers were crowned “Winnipeg’s Fastest Cyclists” today, in anticipation to the Downtown BIZ’s upcoming annual cycling and active transportation festival, Ciclovia, presented by Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC).

Ciclovia is an eco-friendly, healthy-lifestyle festival and active transportation initiative that will see car-free streets designated from Assiniboine Park to the Forks, with the north side of Broadway closed from Osborne to Main Street for festival activities. In its fourth year, Ciclovia encourages cyclists, runners, pedestrians and more to make their way over to Broadway and to enjoy activities like: bike polo, bike tune-ups, a farmers’ and artisans’ market, live music, downtown garage sale, live art, yoga and tai chi, a soap box derby, and more!

The BIZ challenged downtown office workers, students, athletes, and Olympic wannabees today to hop aboard an exercise bike and timed them for best speed/distance travelled. The top 3 fastest cyclists were: Trevor Finch, Heather Allan, and Taren Gesell, who all won Olympic prize packages courtesy of The Bay Downtown, and also donned our winner’s podium.

“Cycling, healthy living, and active transportation are essential in any vibrant downtown,” said Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown BIZ. “We encourage Winnipeg cyclists to attend our annual Ciclovia event on September 9th and to take advantage of our bike tune-up stations or participate in bike polo or the bike rodeo! At Ciclovia, there’s something for everyone!”

Thanks to The Bay Downtown, Starbucks on Graham & Kennedy, and Elite Physiotherapy Clinic for hosting the BIZ’s Ciclovia “Winnipeg’s Fastest Cyclist” search.
