Winnipeg Seeks To Reclaim Title For Canada’s Largest Living Flag

June 30, 2015

Downtown Winnipeg – The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is calling on everyone from far and wide to participate in the annual Canada Day Living Flag event, tomorrow morning (July 1). For the fifth-year anniversary of this annual event, and 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag itself, the photo will be set to the backdrop of Shaw Park, home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, featuring Winnipeg’s signature skyline in the background.

Since the inaugural event in 2011, over 15,000 Winnipeggers have assembled downtown dressed in red and white patriotic attire, to create a living Canadian flag. Attracting young and old, Canadians of every heritage, the event’s new location at the ballpark offers a great kick-off to Canada Day festivities.

“Canada Day is about celebrating our love for our country, and also about appreciating the values that bind us together as a nation,” said Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “This activity is meant to bring folks together in a positive way for our country, city and downtown.”

And since a little heathy competition never hurt, Winnipeg is competing against Ponoka, Toronto, Victoria, Brandon, Regina and Calgary (which claimed the championship title in 2014) to once again assemble the largest living flag in the nation. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in red or white in order to take part. The downtown BIZ will be distributing 2,500 red and white t-shirts, but we’ll need more people than that to break the record – so be sure to wear either red or white!

Support for Canada Day Living Flag also comes from Canadian Heritage, Telenium, the Winnipeg Goldeyes and others.

About the Canada Day Living Flag

The living flag events in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 have captured the imagination and hearts of Winnipeggers, and has become a multicultural mosaic and snapshot of how welcoming, inclusive, and accessible our downtown community truly is. In 2012, our living flag photo was chosen and produced as an official Canada Post stamp – with more than 10 million stamps produced and circulated worldwide. In its first three years, the BIZ defended its title as the “largest living flag” in Canada, beating Langley, Calgary, and Ottawa’s living flags, but was beat out by Calgary in 2014. 2015 is the year to reclaim our largest living flag victory!
