“We are delighted to once again offer our downtown community with a farmers’ market with year-round dates,” says Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “Farmers’ markets not only help support the local economy, they reduce transportation costs and food waste. They help create a unique destination for downtown residents, office workers, students, and tourists – adding vibrancy to our streets and sidewalks and attracting business for downtown stores and restaurants nearby.”

Grande adds: “When we purchase local, we are also promoting a sense of place – and pride for Winnipeg. It makes us feel better connected to our community. When we connect with others and value commodities, especially local ones – it creates more opportunities for local business.”

A popular destination for downtown office workers, residents, and students, the farmers’ market continues to positively impact the core, making it a vibrant and exciting place for people to visit and enjoy. Vendors have trickled in from all parts of Manitoba, bringing with them local produce to feed the downtown masses. According to Farmers’ Markets Canada, farmers’ markets generated $3 billion in economic activity in 2008. There is a demonstrated demand for these markets and for fresh, seasonal and local produce. Over 14 farmers’ markets with 438 vendors have sprung up throughout the city, attracting thousands of visitors. Vendors rate the downtown location as one of the top farmers’ markets in the city.
