Thousands of People Gather at Portage & Main to Create an Experience Worthy of an International Award
Winnipeg, MB – When 3,600 Winnipeggers connect at the iconic intersection of Portage and Main on July 1, 2017, no one knew that the seventh annual Canada Day Living Flag event would go viral. Event photos and time-lapse video of the 201 Portage Canada Day Living Flag were viewed by over 170 million people throughout the world as we celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday. Now the event is being recognized internationally.
The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is proud to receive the international Downtown Association (IDA) Downtown Achievement Award of Excellence for the 201 Portage Canada Day Living Maple Leaf event. The award will be presented at the 64th Annual Conference and Tradeshow in San Antonio, Texas on October 24th, 2018.
“The 201 Portage Canada Day Living Maple Leaf showcased Winnipeg’s downtown to the world as volunteers and participants brought life and energy to Portage and Main,” said Downtown Winnipeg BIZ CEO Kate Fenske. “This intersection, in the heart of Winnipeg, served as the perfect backdrop and I couldn’t be more proud of our team and the dedicated volunteers who made this event happen. We thank the IDA for recognizing our community who came together to celebrate Canada’s birthday.”
The 201 Portage Canada Day Living Flag was among 22 qualified entries in the category of Events and Programming. This category features programs and events that improved the image and vitality of downtown.
“The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ 201 Portage Canada Day Living Flag event received the IDA Award of excellence for uniquely implementing best practice in urban place management,’ said David Downey, IDA President and CEO. “The 201 Portage Canada Day Living Flag is a shining example of excellent urban place management delivering real value to the city and an exemplary response to a community challenge.”
This Saturday thousands of Winnipeggers will once again be converging at Portage & Main (at the corners), bringing that same energy to downtown Winnipeg as we highlight the importance of this intersection with OpenFest: https://voteopenwpg.ca/openfest/.
