FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TAKE ME BACK TO THE BALLPARK FOR CANADA’S LARGEST LIVING FLAG EVENT!
Downtown Winnipeg – Once again, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ invites everyone to participate in the annual Canada Day Living Flag event on Canada Day, July 1st. For the sixth-year anniversary of this annual event, and 51st anniversary of the Canadian flag itself, the photo will be returning to Shaw Park, home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The photo will be set to the backdrop of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Provencher Bridge, the Esplanade Riel, and The Forks.
Since the inaugural event in 2011, over 18,000 Winnipeggers have assembled downtown dressed in red and white patriotic attire, to create a living Canadian flag. Attracting young and old, Canadians of every heritage, the event’s location at the ballpark offers a great kick-off to Canada Day festivities.

Where: Shaw Park (rain or shine, shelter available; venue is fully accessible)

“Canada Day is all about celebrating our love for our country, and appreciating the values that bind us together as a nation,” said Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “The largest Canada Day Living Flag competition is meant to bring folks together in a positive way for our country, city and downtown.”
Winnipeg will be competing against Victoria, Calgary, Regina, and Toronto to once again assemble the largest living flag in the nation. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in red or white in order to take part. The Downtown BIZ will be distributing 2,500 red and white t-shirts, but we’ll need more people than that to break the record – so be sure to wear either red or white!
Support for Canada Day Living Flag also comes from Canada Heritage, Telenium, The Flag Shop, the Winnipeg Goldeyes, CBC Manitoba, Winnipeg Sun, QX 104 and many others.
About the Canada Day Living Flag
The living flag events in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 have captured the imagination and hearts of Winnipeggers, and has become a multicultural mosaic and snapshot of how welcoming, inclusive, and accessible our downtown community truly is. In 2012, our living flag photo was chosen and produced as an official Canada Post stamp – with more than 10 million stamps produced and circulated worldwide. In its first three years, the BIZ defended its title as the “largest living flag” in Canada, beating Langley, Calgary, and Ottawa’s living flags, but was beat out by Calgary in 2014. In 2015, the BIZ brought the title back to Winnipeg and reclaimed our largest living flag victory!
