Canada Day Living Flag
We’ve had a lot of fun hosting the Canada Day Living Maple Leaf/Living Flag for the past few years and have celebrated some major successes including thousands of people starting their Canada Day with us, an incredible team of volunteers who made the events happen, claiming the title of the biggest living Canada flag and biggest living maple leaf, our photo being featured on a Canada Post stamp, as well as the wildly fun and viral success that last year’s Portage & Main photo had internationally.
Like all great initiatives, it’s important to know when to move on (while you’re still at the top of the flag pole). We are retiring this event at this time. If anyone is interested in taking this on in the future, we would happily share our knowledge with them to set them up for success. Thank you to all of the Canada Day Living Flag volunteers, without whom these events would not have been possible.
We are so grateful to everyone who helped us over the years in creating the photo and appreciate the opportunity to end on the highest of high notes with our 201 Portage Canada Day Living Maple Leaf event in 2017 at Portage & Main celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday!
Thank you again for some many great memories and photos! We invite you to take part in one of the great Canada Day events already happening downtown, including the family friendly events that take place at The Forks.
The BIZ would like to extend a huge thank you to the committee, the volunteers and all of the people who joined us in created the 201 Portage Canada Day Living Maple Leaf. We appreciate the 3,600 proud Winnipeggers joined us bright and early at Portage & Main!
Thank you to all of our very special sponsors: 201 Portage, Canadian Heritage, CBC Manitoba, Winnipeg Sun, Special T-Shirt Company, Winnipeg Goldeyes, The Flag Shop, Telenium, QX104.
Thank you too to all of the volunteers and the planning committee!

Another successful Canada Day Living Flag event in Winnipeg with an estimated 3,500 participants! Thank you to the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedics Service for helping with the flag. Also thank you to our dedicated volunteer base that make the event possible.
Winnipeg’s strong sense of community pride will be forever enshrined in the hearts and minds of Canadians – as the Downtown BIZ’s Canada Day Living Flag photo was selected by Canada Post to be part of the Canadian Pride series that was issued January 14, 2013.
