Treaty No.1 Territory, Winnipeg, MB – The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is proud to partner again with local Métis artist Justine Proulx to bring The Big Bear and the Seven Birds to life as a temporary mural now on display in the skywalk over Graham Avenue between 300 Main Street and 200 Graham Avenue.
Spanning nine panels and measuring approximately 68 feet in length and 5 feet tall, the mural is inspired by a Cree story shared with Justine Proulx by Indigenous astronomer Wilfred Buck. This latest work builds on her contributions to downtown’s public art, including Returning to Our Roots at RBC Convention Centre.
“For Indigenous people, these are not just simple stories, but interpretations of our place in the world and our interconnectedness with all Creation,” says Justine. “These teachings give us guidance, teach important life lessons, and are a bridge for us to pass knowledge to the next generation.”
“For many Indigenous peoples, winter is a time for gathering, sharing, and learning through storytelling,” says Madeleine, Manager of Public Realm at Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “This mural honours the rich tradition of Indigenous storytelling, inviting Winnipeggers to engage with art that transforms public spaces into places of cultural expression and connection.”
Downtown workers, students, residents and visitors are encouraged to take a moment to experience this compelling mural while walking through the skywalk, where it will be on display for a limited time.
