Mayor Bowman & Downtown BIZ Staff Announce Winnipeg as Site for International Conference in 2017

Downtown Winnipeg – Twenty years ago, more than 700 delegates came to Winnipeg for the annual International Downtown Association (IDA) conference. On September 9 at 3 p.m. in Atlanta, Georgia, the site for this year’s conference, Mayor Brian Bowman will join representatives from the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, Exchange District BIZ, and West End BIZ to officially announce Winnipeg as the chosen city for IDA’s 2017 conference.

The International Downtown Association is a world leader and champion for vital and livable urban centers. Through its network of diverse practitioners, its rich body of knowledge, and its unique capacity to nurture community-building partnerships, IDA provides tools, intelligence and strategies for creating healthy and dynamic centers that anchor the well-being of towns, cities and regions of the world.

“I’m excited for the IDA’s return to Winnipeg so they can see the remarkable transformation that has occurred in our downtown over the last 20 years,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “With over $1 Billion in investments over the past year, the transformation in our downtown is still underway. As hosts of the conference, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, Exchange District BIZ, and West End BIZ, are responsible for providing local support to plan an exciting and thought-provoking conference, filled with mobile workshops, dynamic speakers, and opening and closing receptions.

“Winnipeg has what it takes to host a standout conference like the International Downtown Association,” said Deborah O’Bray, Chair of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ’s Management Board. “Residential growth, entertainment, waterfront development, heritage preservation, events and culture have played an important role in our downtown’s revitalization. This makes our city an important learning laboratory and destination for IDA members. We’re eager to give each delegate a warm welcome ─ from friendly front-line staff to inspired events to dynamic seminars and mobile workshops. We’re excited to share downtown Winnipeg’s story to the rest of the world.”

IDA Winnipeg 2017 will be hosted by Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, Exchange District BIZ, and West End BIZ, guided by an Advisory Committee including: City of Winnipeg, Province of Manitoba, Economic Development Winnipeg, Tourism Winnipeg, RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, The Forks North Portage Partnership, CentreVenture Development Corporation, Take Pride Winnipeg, and Capital Commercial Real Estate Services.
