Marbles on Portage

Giant Marbles Installed on Portage Avenue
And Save the Date for the official opening of Marbles on Portage

Downtown Winnipeg – Winnipeggers working and living downtown will be privy to an interesting view today: 20 giant marbles being installed on the sidewalk. These beautiful new pieces are a new public artwork installation by Erica Swendrowski that will officially open for the public to see on July 31st at 12:00pm.

The project, called Marbles on Portage, was a joint collaboration between the Winnipeg Arts Council Public Art Program and the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.

The Marbles on Portage artist Erica Swendrowski sought to create a unique and playful atmosphere within Winnipeg’s historic downtown by installing 20 larger-than-life marble sculptures in planters and on the median along Portage Avenue. The 3’ and 4’6” marbles captivate the imagination of young and old alike and reveal how familiar everyday items can make life extraordinary. While staying true to the distinguishing characteristics of traditional glass marbles, the sculptures also incorporate soft glowing light and living plants. The diverse elements will create an atmosphere of imaginative possibilities day and night all year-round.

Catch Erica installing the work today, then join us for the opening next week!
