THE DRIVE-IN SURFACES IN DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG AT A PARKING LOT IN THE SHED

Downtown Drive-In outdoor summer movie series features four villainous movie classics: August 9 to 30

WINNIPEG, MB.  July 23, 2014 – Downtown partners, CentreVenture Development Corporation, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) are pleased to announce a new urban Drive-In outdoor movie series in the emerging Sports, Hospitality, and Entertainment District (SHED). This event for the public will light up MPI’s cityplace parking lot every Saturday at sundown from August 9 through to August 30, 2014. Free for people arriving on bikes, transit, or on foot and $10 to reserve your car spot.

“Summer evenings in our city are a good time to enjoy truly world class food, entertainment and social experiences,” said Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief, minister responsible for the City of Winnipeg.‎ “This is another fun opportunity for people to come downtown and be close to the action.”

“For those who grew up in the era when drive-ins were the place to go see a movie, this is a superb way to reconnect with our City’s downtown through a family entertainment favourite,” said City of Winnipeg’s Mayor Sam Katz. “The Drive-In experience is a nostalgic look back at such a fun time and I encourage citizens to attend an iconic entertainment activity in our new emerging SHED.”

This summer’s premier Downtown Winnipeg Drive-In will focus on some of the greatest movie villains of all time. The Dark Knight kicks off the villainous movie classic series and is followed by Zoolander and The Avengers. The public will vote between The Matrix or Terminator 2 for the final movie screening. Bike-in, drive-in, bus-in or walk to the show. Bring chairs or a blanket and enjoy offerings from a variety of nearby restaurants. Audience members are encouraged to explore the many dining and entertainment options in and around The SHED before and after the screenings. To accommodate all modes of transit, the Drive-In site will be divided into three sections, providing options for seating, bicycle parking and automobiles on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“They may be disappearing from the landscape one-by-one, but drive-in movies certainly aren’t forgotten”, said Ross McGowan, President & CEO, CentreVenture Development Corporation. “We are excited to welcome audiences to our emerging entertainment district for an outdoor event that brings our community together and supports local businesses.”

“There is something special about doing indoor things outdoors,” says Stefano Grande, executive director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “You get a chance to breathe in the fresh air and experience downtown in a way you may not have done before. With the addition of a second movie screening location, we’re giving people even more reasons to come check out their downtown in the evenings and weekends.”
