DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG BIZ INVESTS CLOSE TO $100,000 IN DOWNTOWN EVENTS AND ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF HOST IT FUNDING
Winnipeg, Manitoba –Think it, dream it, plan it … Host It Downtown! The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is proud to announce the most recent recipients of the Host It Downtown funding on Monday, July 31st at The Forks (Under the Canopy) starting at 11 am.
Host It Downtown is an innovative program that aims to solidify downtown Winnipeg as the premier destination for high-quality and outdoor events year-round – by providing individuals or organizations with the opportunity for seed funding and event support; creating new events, expanding current events and attracting existing events to the heart of our city. This year alone, area festivals and events are receiving almost $100,000 in funding through the Host It Downtown program, bringing the total amount of festival-goers in the downtown to well over a million annually.
In 2017, Host It funds are supporting the following festivals and events:
- BBQ & Blues Festival
- Carbone Canada Day Music Festival & Block Party
- Heritage Winnipeg Doors Open
- I AM
- Interstellar Rodeo
- Manitoba Arts Network Rural & Northern Juried Art Show
- Manitoba Culture Days Nuit Blanche
There are several festivals that are in the application process that may also receive funding in 2017.
“50 festivals already run in the downtown, attracting well over 950,000 people annually, generating economic and social activity, activating our streets, and giving Winnipeggers great reasons to come downtown,” says Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “Host It Downtown looks to build on this energy and attract even more visits into the heart of our city, with a greater focus on evening and winter. When people visit the downtown at all hours of the day, we are sure to see a more revitalized core and a local economy supported with a greater economic spend.”
Festivals and event producers are always encouraged to apply for Host It funding through the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. Information on how to apply can be found at: http://downtownwinnipegbiz.com/programs-services/host-it-downtown/.
- Event must be located within the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ operating zone
- Applications and all accompanying materials must by the deadline
- Organizers must show a commitment to minimize the environmental impact of the event
- Priority given to events that focus on winter, evening, and weekend programming
Successful applicants will be provided support for their event in the form of both an upfront grant to support their event plus access to funding, should their event show a loss, as well as provided services, event infrastructure, and guidance from Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. Host It Downtown has a budget of $150,000 to fund new initiatives and the experience of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ team including the Downtown Watch and Enviro-Clean Teams that can aid in ensuring events are safe and clean.

About the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ
Established in 1989 by the City of Winnipeg, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is the oldest of Winnipeg’s 16 business improvement zones. Directed by a management board of 15 business owners/leaders and a representative from city hall, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ markets the city centre on behalf of 1,300 businesses and runs programs and provides services that target downtown image, cleanliness, safety, transportation, and parking.
