Downtown community pitches in for Earth Day Cleanup

April 21, 2021, Winnipeg, MB – Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is once again hosting its annual Earth Day CleanUp. From 10:00a.m. until 12:00p.m., employees from downtown businesses and community-members will roll up their sleeves and pick up litter in small, distanced groups spread throughout downtown.

“Participants are able to connect with one another safely while showing community spirit and caring for the planet,” says Kate Fenske, CEO of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “Whether they’re co-workers, residents or other members of the downtown community, Earth Day CleanUp Downtown offers plenty of space for physically distancing outdoors and connecting while making a difference in our neighbourhood.”

The event has helped tidy up downtown every year since 2014, except for 2020 when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, teams from a variety of downtown businesses collected a total combined weight of 1,262 pounds (572 kilograms) of garbage.

This year, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is adding a second opportunity to pitch in: groups and individuals can order a complimentary CleanUp Kit and pick up litter at their own pace any time until the end of the week. Kits will include gloves, garbage bags, and a cleanup information package in a Downtown Winnipeg BIZ reusable bag.

Earth Day CleanUp Downtown is also offering an incentive for participants in the event today and individuals and groups who decide to pick up at their own pace. Each participant will be entered into a draw for a $50 gift card to a downtown business of their choice.

While supplies last, anyone who wants to participate can register for a CleanUp Kit by emailing the size of your CleanUp crew to events@downtownwinnipegbiz.com.
