Chinatown Festival

August 2, 2011

WINNIPEG, MB—The streets of Chinatown will come alive with lion dances, Chinese kung fu, music, Chinese dance, and a merchant market this weekend for the third annual Winnipeg Chinatown Street Festival, August 6 and 7. The free festival is presented by the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre and the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.

King Street between James and Alexander will be closed to traffic and filled with excitement. On Saturday, August 6, the festival kicks off at noon and runs to 8pm. On Sunday, August 7, the festival runs from noon to 6pm. The festival is open to everyone.

“This festival is a way for the Chinese community to welcome the larger Winnipeg community to come discover this unique cultural district,” says Kevin Fan, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural Centre.

“This is a wonderful festival for downtown that celebrates the important and historic community of Chinatown,” says Stefano Grande, Downtown BIZ Executive Director. “It’s another great event that attracts people downtown for a unique experience. We’re hoping Winnipeggers will come out to explore this jewel in our downtown.”

The Downtown BIZ provides staff support to this and other downtown events, including Downtown Watch ambassadors to assist with security needs and the BIZ Metro Enviro-Team to assist with pre-, during and post-event clean-up.
