JUMP INTO THE NEW YEAR OF THE RABBIT WITH THE CHINATOWN BANNER COMPETITION
WINNIPEG—To celebrate the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is now accepting entries for the annual Chinatown Banner Competition. The winning banner design will be displayed in Chinatown for the duration of the year, beginning on February 3, Chinese New Year.
Executive Director for the Downtown BIZ, Stefano Grande, looks forward to this competition every year. “It’s a great way to get the community involved in beautifying downtown while giving artists an outlet to display their work,” he says.
All Manitoba artists in fields such as graphic design, writing, illustration, photography, architecture, sketching, etc. are welcome to submit a banner design. This year’s winner will be announced in February and awarded an $800 honorarium for their efforts.
Banner designs will be assessed by members of the Chinatown Banner Competition Jury, which is composed of members of the Downtown BIZ as well as the Chinese Community, based on criteria such as artistic merit, readability, cross-seasonal impact, and the extent to which the Year of the Rabbit theme is used in the design. All submissions must be received by the Downtown BIZ by Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 4:30 p.m.
The annual contest is hosted by the Downtown BIZ and the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Chinatown. The winning designs are mounted on poles in the six square blocks surrounded by Main Street, Princess Street, Logan Avenue and James Avenue.
