DOWNTOWN BIZ HOLDS 20TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND GIVES OUT 5TH ANNUAL DOWNTOWN ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
WINNIPEG, MB—This week the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ celebrated 20 years of revitalization in downtown Winnipeg at their 20th Annual General Meeting. Executive director, Stefano Grande, highlighted the BIZ’s achievements of 2009 including the more than 50 programs the BIZ runs in the areas of image and cleanliness; communications and marketing; events and promotions; transportation, parking and transit; and community safety.
The presentation also highlighted the plans for 2010 and next year’s budget totalling $2.8-million. Improving safety and cleaning up downtown are the two most important priorities at the BIZ. Over 60 per cent of the budget is dedicated to these two areas, with marketing downtown being the third most important goal.
“I am more confident than ever about the important role the BIZ has played in the growth and promotion of downtown,” says Grande. “Seven short years ago, the BIZ had just two full-time staff. Now we have over 30, operate a fleet of vehicles and are making a difference every day. Our programs and constant dedication to safety and cleanliness all work towards our goal of being the ‘host of downtown Winnipeg'”.
During the AGM, the 5th Annual Downtown Achievement Awards were also handed out. These awards honour businesses that have been making a difference in downtown. The winners were:
Outstanding Downtown Tradition–Santa Claus Parade
Outstanding Long-Term Commitment and Growth–The University of Winnipeg
Outstanding Commitment to Development and Innovation–Hotel Fort Garry
Outstanding Contribution to Downtown Visits (5 million in 5 years)–The MTS Centre
Outstanding Small Business–Kite and Kaboodle
