Bike Patrol Hits Streets

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

WINNIPEG, MB—The men and women of the Downtown BIZ Watch will be soon be heading out on two wheels as they keep downtown safe this summer.

The 10 members of Downtown Watch Bike Patrol will cruise through downtown keeping an eye on The Forks and all corners of our core. Bike Patrols also keep an eye on Central Park and ride inside downtown’s parkades. They operate from 8am-midnight until the end of May and from 8am-4am from June 1 to August 31.

From April 26-28, the Bike Patrol is undergoing training and media are invited to see the team in full uniform before they start their official patrol the next day.

When: Wednesday, April 28, 10am

Where: Outside Mountain Equipment Co-op, 303 Portage Avenue

What: The Downtown Bike Patrol will engage in balance and agility drills on the final day of their training

“The bike patrol can move faster thus making them even more efficient,” says Stefano Grande, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ executive director. “Patrols on bikes are also more quiet, so they have the added benefit of stealth. It’s just another tool in keeping our downtown as safe as possible for everyone.”

The Bike Patrol is outfitted in 10 brand new bikes sponsored by Mountain Equipment Co-op. Their training encompasses bike safety (including at night), endurance, balancing and equipment repair and maintenance.

“It’s a real honour to be able to support the bike patrol,” says Ken Berg, manager of Mountain Equipment Co-op. “The work they do is very important to ensure a vibrant and safe downtown.”
