Big Street Party!

August 25, 2011
DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG—Downtown Winnipeg’s biggest street party is only two weeks away! ManyFest: All together downtown, will see an anticipated 30,000-plus people celebrating on Broadway September 9 to 11, 2011, presented by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and our partners.
The festival for all ages celebrates community, arts, entertainment and healthy living on the streets of downtown Winnipeg beneath Broadway’s beautiful lit canopy of elm trees, from Memorial Boulevard to Main Street. The three-day outdoor festival will feature a movie in the park, wine festival, Big Dance, music, farmers and artisan markets, Lights on Broadway, Ciclovia, Kids’ Zone, and the Winnipeg 10 & 10 Race.
New this year, the free outdoor movie, Toy Story 3, will be held on the grass of Memorial Park on Friday night at sun down (about 8pm). Also new is a 5 km run or walk on Sunday morning, part of the Winnipeg 10 & 10 Race, perfect for families. This year’s ManyFest will also feature an expanded Kids’ Zone—including pony rides—and expanded farmers’ and artisans’ market.
Varying stretches of the north side of Broadway will be closed to vehicular traffic over the weekend, culminating in Ciclovia, when the street will flood with people from Main to Osborne.
Last September, an estimated 30,000 people enjoyed Five Events. One Weekend, with Lights on Broadway, Ciclovia, the Big Dance on Broadway, Taste of Downtown Winnipeg Wine & Cheese Festival, and the 10 & 10 Race. In 2009, Ciclovia drew crowds downtown on a Sunday when Broadway was closed to traffic for cycling, rollerblading, jogging and strolling, with community programming and activities down the street. For 2010, four more events joined Ciclovia over the span of a weekend. In 2011, ManyFest will feature eight main events under the one umbrella festival name.
“What an amazing experience it was to walk down Broadway’s boulevard under the canopy of lit elms, with thousands of people carrying candles last September,” says Stefano Grande, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ executive director. “It was a magical weekend for downtown. I encourage Winnipeggers to come out to this special festival in the heart of our city.”
Last year, over 150 volunteers and dozens of community groups devoted their time and helped give back to the community by bringing excitement and enthusiasm to the event. This year the Downtown BIZ’s goal is the same. Anyone wanting to volunteer for the festival can visit:
ManyFest is in support of Change for the Better, supporting homeless employment programs. We also encourage attendees to “Bring a Tin for the Bin” for Winnipeg Harvest!
There will also be on site a free Bike Valet – so anyone riding to Broadway on their bike can store their bike—or stroller—while they leisurely enjoy the festival. Hours: Friday and Saturday: 11:30am – 11:30pm; Sunday: 7:30am – 8:30pm. Location: In Memorial Park on Broadway at Osborne Street. Attendees are also invited to bring their water bottle for free water fill-ups on the street.
One of the festival highlights is Lights on Broadway. Volunteers will hand out 5,000 free candles and at 9pm the tree lights will be switched on so attendees can stroll down Broadway admiring the lit trees.
