“Our farmers’ market has become a staple in downtown Winnipeg,” says Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “Every year, employees and their customers, as well as local residents, look forward to visiting the farmers’ market at Manitoba Hydro, and it’s just another reason to enjoy downtown in the summer. Farmers’ markets not only help to support the local economy, they reduce transportation costs and food waste. They help to create a unique destination and bring us one step closer to our vision for a truly walkable and dense community – adding vibrancy to our streets and sidewalks and attracting business for downtown stores and restaurants nearby.”

A popular destination for downtown office workers, residents, and students, the farmers’ market continues to positively impact the core, making it a vibrant and exciting place for people to visit and enjoy. Vendors have trickled in from all parts of Manitoba, bringing with them local produce to feed the downtown masses. According to Farmers’ Markets Canada, farmers’ markets generated $3 billion in economic activity in 2008. There is a demonstrated demand for these markets and for fresh, seasonal and local produce. Over 14 farmers’ markets with 438 vendors have sprung up throughout the city, attracting thousands of visitors. Vendors rate the downtown location as one of the top farmers’ markets in the city.
