8 New Artworks Installed on Prominent Portage Ave Storefront

September 23, 2014

Downtown Winnipeg – To add to the ongoing efforts to beautify the public realm and to strengthen local downtown businesses by supporting the visual appeal of their buildings, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, with the support of Gendis Inc. and Dollarama has unveiled 8 new artworks designed by the community, as part of the inaugural Urban Art Gallery initiative.

Urban Art Gallery is an annual design competition that supports downtown businesses by integrating curated art galleries with their store frontages. In addition to having their artwork displayed in a significant way, each Winnipeg artist will be paid an honorarium of $500 for their winning design.

“Our goal is to create a visual gallery at 295 Portage Avenue to enhance the quality of life and increase community interaction in downtown Winnipeg. Art has the ability to bring communities together, build common experience, promote communication and improve the visual landscape of the city block,” says Linda McGarva-Cohen, on behalf of Gendis Inc.

“We know our downtown community is diverse, thoughtful, and tremendously artistic and bold,” says Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg. “This competition invited Winnipeggers to make their mark downtown and will help to stimulate a conversation about the importance of good design and enhanced store frontages in the heart of our city.”

Urban Art Design is a project of the Downtown BIZ and Gendis Inc. The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is a not-for-profit organization funded through a levy on business tax that coordinates many programs and initiatives to improve and promote downtown Winnipeg. Gendis Inc. leases commercial real estate properties and invests in marketable securities and private placements primarily in the energy and agribusiness sectors.

Gendis Inc. is a publicly traded company on the TSX and is involved in commercial real estate management and also holds public and private investments in companies involved in pipelines and power plants, oil and gas development, canola crop marketing, fertilizer production and waste management solutions.
