3,500 Participants in Living Flag

July 1, 2013

Downtown Winnipeg – With numbers coming in from other cities’ living flag events, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is confident that Winnipeggers have once again defended its ‘Largest Living Flag’ title in Canada – with an estimated 3,500 Winnipeggers who came out, dressed in red and white, to form the BIZ’s third living flag at the Manitoba Legislative Grounds to honour and celebrate Canada Day.

Victoria, the National Capital Region, and Calgary, all took part in this Canada-wide competition, and we thank them for participating. The Honourable Steven Fletcher, The Honourable Flor Marcelino, and City Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, took part in our celebration, specifically highlighting the strong sense of community demonstrated by of our participants.

“We were blown away by the enthusiasm and spirit of Winnipeggers who came out today – some as early as 5:50AM,” said Stefano Grande, executive director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “We’ve proven once again that we’re still the city to beat, having defended our ‘largest living flag’ title again – highlighting our resounding pride in Winnipeg and our downtown.”

The living flag events have captured the imagination and hearts of Winnipeggers, and has become a multicultural mosaic and snapshot of how welcoming, inclusive, and accessible our downtown community truly is. In 2012, our living flag photo was chosen and produced as an official Canada Post stamp – with more than 10 million stamps produced and circulated worldwide.

With a bright, sunny, and festive backdrop, the 3rd annual Canada Day Living Flag event hopes to bring Winnipeggers together to celebrate our wonderful country as a collectively engaged community, attracting young and old, as well as new Canadians. The event is part of a larger push towards 2017, Canada’s 150th birthday, where we hope to engage and mobilize even more Winnipeggers to participate.
