21 YEAR OF THE DRAGON STREET BANNERS TO BE RAISED IN CHINATOWN JANUARY 24

Downtown Winnipeg — 21 new street banners celebrating the energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm of the Year of the Dragon will be raised in Chinatown today as part of the Downtown BIZ’s annual Chinatown Banner Competition.

The winning banner design by a Red River College student was selected among 57 entries, up from 48 last year, by a jury made up in part by members of the Chinese community.

The winning designer, Jessica Constable, is a second year Red River College Graphic Design student who attends school not far from where the banners will be displayed. She will receive a $400 honorarium, with an additional $400 going to the spring Creative Arts Graphic Design Open House. The banner will be officially unveiled at the Chinese New Year Banquet at Kum Koon Garden (257 King Street) on January 24 around 6:30pm.

The jury selected the design because it was artistically strong, eye-catching and viewable from the street. The banner captures the bold, dramatic and confident attributes of the Dragon. It also incorporates elements of traditional Chinese characters embedded in the logo, presenting a fresh yet contemporary look.

“I decided to illustrate a fairly traditional looking dragon but to have him emerging from the water, not looking too fierce but powerful,” says Constable. “The colours I chose for the dragon are different shades of orange, red and yellow; making him vibrant and stand out. Dragons are powerful creatures and deserve to be depicted in that manner.”

“People coming to and from the downtown will be pleasantly surprised seeing this year’s design,” says Stefano Grande, Downtown BIZ Executive Director. “The design is a departure from what we’ve selected in the past, so I think it will make quite a splash in Chinatown. Judging from the number of designs submitted, the banner competition is a great way to showcase our local talent and rejuvenate interest in this unique and dynamic district of our city centre.”

The new banners will join 21 district banners currently on light poles which celebrate the Chinatown area.

All banner submissions will be on display in a storefront window on the second level of Portage Place near the escalators to Staples from January 24 to March 9.

The annual contest is hosted by the Downtown BIZ and the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Chinatown. The winning designs are mounted on poles in the six square blocks surrounded by Main Street, Princess Street, Logan Avenue and James Avenue. Visit www.downtownwinnipegbiz.com for more information.
