FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
#BUSISBETTER RETURNS JUNE 5-9 AS PART OF THE COMMUTER CHALLENGE
Downtown Winnipeg – In an effort to showcase transit riding and once again encourage citizens and in particular, downtown workers, to take transit during the Commuter Challenge, the #BusIsBetter campaign returns to the downtown. Through June 5-9, from 7am-9am each day, transit riders in select areas of the downtown will be gifted with free coffee, reusable transit pass holders and lanyards. Two hundred of the pass holders also contain a coupon for a free pie from Lord of the Pies, which can be redeemed at the Downtown Farmers’ Market on Thursday, June 8.
To pre-promote the event and to encourage downtown car commuters to try the bus during the Commuter Challenge, 300, 5-day weekday transit passes were handed out to those who registered for them. Demand for the passes exceeded the availability and were handed out on a first come, first served basis last week.
“The Downtown BIZ has given particular thought to the importance of transit for our downtown workers, residents and students in connecting people to our downtown,” says Stefano Grande, CEO of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.” The #BusIsBetter campaign aims to engage more downtown workers and other commuters to use transit more often, and explore other transportation options.
With more than 45,000 trips made into the downtown each morning by car, the need for sustainable transportation options, like transit, is absolutely critical.
The goal of the #busisbetter campaign is not only to encourage transit use and to ensure it is a positive experience for first-time users, but an opportunity to highlight the importance of transit-oriented development in and around downtown Winnipeg, as it relates to the utilization of transit services within the city. Feedback from 2016 identified that riders found the bus to be convenient and relaxing and that the bus drivers polite and respectful.
Thank you to our generous partners and sponsors: Winnipeg Transit, Green Action Centre, Lord of the Pies and the Winnipeg Transit Riders Association.
