2018 Chinatown Banner Design Revealed

February 19, 2018

Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Year of the Dog was happily welcomed at the Chinese New Year Banquet located at Kum Koon Garden, where the winning design from the 2018 Chinatown Banner Competition was officially unveiled. The unveiling introduced the new and original design that will be displayed along many of Chinatown’s busiest streets. The annual competition, a partnership between the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre, aims to celebrate arts, culture and the community, and mark the arrival of the Chinese New Year.

Eighteen new banners will be displayed in Chinatown, breathing new life and rejuvenating the community’s interest in this unique and dynamic district of our city centre. The winning design will be mounted on poles surrounded by Main Street, Princess Street, Logan Avenue and James Avenue.

First time banner designer and student from the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, Laura McGinn, was awarded with a plaque and honorarium and was pleased that her banner design was selected to welcome residents and visitors to one of her favourite districts in Winnipeg.

Of the 43 entries received this year, the jury was thrilled to select the winning Year of the Dog banner for its thoughtful design. The banner showcases a Pekingese dog, an ancient breed from China favoured by the royalty of the Chinese Imperial Court. The design is also reminiscent of Chinese Red Envelopes, traditionally given out during the Chinese New Year. The jury felt that the banner design captured the essence of the Year of the Dog and believe that this banner will fit seamlessly into the architecture and culture of Chinatown.

“The new banners help to define the boundaries of Chinatown, as well as provide both a traditional and energetic look and design to welcome residents and visitors to this unique Winnipeg area,” says Stefano Grande, CEO of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.
