Young Entrepreneurs Take Over Downtown Winnipeg

YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS
TAKE OVER DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG
Downtown Winnipeg – Over 150 young people from all over Winnipeg are now equipped with essential tools needed to open up a business downtown, having learned a lesson or two at the Downtown BIZ’s ‘Young Entrepreneurs Take Downtown’ event on April 25, presented by Royal Bank of Canada.

“Fostering an entrepreneurial spirit with our youth is part of a larger vision of the BIZ in wanting to connect young people and our downtown together,” said Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown BIZ. “We want to see more young people opening businesses downtown!”

Youth participants gathered useful information and attended workshops from organizations like: Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Youth Business Foundation, Women’s Enterprise Centre, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, Business Development Bank of Canada, Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre, U of W Business Administration Students’ Association, Royal Bank of Canada and Province of Manitoba.

Participants also took a tour of downtown’s incredible vacant spaces and attended a forum in the evening where young business owners shared their success stories about opening a business downtown.

Sachit Mehra, owner of East India Company and a forum panelist at the event, offered these young entrepreneurs some advice: “There are great pockets of real estate all over downtown that can accommodate most kinds of business. Don’t be afraid to try out your retail idea. ‘Biggest’ is not necessarily always best or needed. Take some risks.”

Along with this event, the BIZ has shown its commitment to young entrepreneurs by establishing the Downtown BIZ Kevin Donnelly Bursary in Business and Economics at the University of Winnipeg. This bursary will be awarded annually to a deserving business student who is also a member of the Business Administration Students’ Association (BASA). The bursary recognizes the importance of young entrepreneurs and their contribution to the economic vitality, growth and revitalization of our downtown.
