FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PORTAGE PLACE FAÇADE BECOMES HOME TO 9 NEW ARTWORKS
Downtown Winnipeg – To add to the ongoing efforts to beautify the public realm and to strengthen local downtown businesses by supporting the visual appeal of their buildings, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, with the support of Portage Place Shopping Centre unveiled 9 new artworks designed by 7 artists from the community, as part of the second installation of the Urban Art Gallery initiative. Building on the success of the first Urban Art Gallery at 295 Portage Ave., visitors to Portage Place will be treated to photographs, drawings, and poetry drawing on the theme of “home”.
Urban Art Gallery is an annual design competition that supports downtown businesses by integrating curated art galleries with their store frontages. In addition to having their artwork displayed in a significant way, each Winnipeg artist will be paid an honorarium for their winning design.
“Portage Place is a proud partner of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ,” says Dave Stone, General Manager of Portage Place Shopping Centre. “We are thrilled to see our store frontage uplifted with great community artwork. This type of installation brings people and communities together, builds common experience, and improves the visual quality and texture of the area – these are priorities of Portage Place. We invite Winnipeggers to visit and learn more about the artists.”
“We’re ecstatic to work with Portage Place to celebrate the artistic talent of our city,” says Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg. “The second installment of Urban Art Gallery invited Winnipeggers to make their mark downtown and will help to stimulate a conversation about the importance of good design and enhanced store frontages in the heart of our city.”
Congratulations to artists Svetlana Russco, Isabelle LaFreniere, Leslie Franklin, Blaise Lachiver, Genevie Henderson, Ildiko Nova, and Lesley Nakonechny. For their bios and descriptions of the inspiration behind their artwork, visit: www.downtownwinnipegbiz.com.
