The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is looking for a hardworking young man or woman to work full-time for 12 weeks as an intern, to conduct an inventory and assessment of downtown parking facilities and assist in the transformation of downtown window displays and their frontages.

Requirements:
•Background in environmental design, architecture, interior design, fine arts or comparable field
•Excellent knowledge of Downtown Winnipeg
•Physically fit and active as a great deal of walking is required
•Confident oral communicator
•Strong writing abilities
•Professional, self-assured demeanor, representing the Downtown BIZ
•Provide your own computer, off-site
•Access to design software, e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, etc.
•Basic photography skills
•Attentive to visual details
•Solid work ethic, dependable, reliable and able to work effectively without supervision

When: Starting May 15, 2013 – August 9, 2013
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Rate:$12.50 per Hour

Job Description

Title:Downtown Streetscape Intern – Seasonal

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Manager, Image and Transportation and the Transportation Committee, the student intern will be responsible for assessing parking lot challenges and opportunities in the downtown as well as assisting with the transformation of downtown window displays and their frontage. The position will report to the Manager, Image and Transportation.

When:Twelve weeks starting May 15, 2013 until August 9 2013

Work Hours:Monday to Friday, 8:30 – 4:30, 35 hours per week.

Rate:$12.50 per hour

Duties & Responsibilities:

Surface Parking Lot Surveys (May 15 to July 11)
•Following up on surveys done in 2012, conduct an inventory assessment of each of downtown’s surface parking lots, determining a list of deficiencies to provide to downtown parking lot operators on a weekly basis.
•Undertake regular communication with parking lot operators, doing follow up visits of lots requiring attention.
•Provide documentation to city by-law enforcement as needed when improvements to lots have not been made on a timely basis.
•Follow up with parking lot owners who are close to reaching Gold Star Standard Parking Status to engage them with this program.
•Complete a summary document of current status of lots at the end of the term.
•If time permits, interview select operators/owners of downtown parking facilities to obtain anecdotal documentation of challenges and successes of their facilities.
•If time permits, undertake documentation of downtown’s pedestrian realm, through means such as photography and mapping.

 

Window Décor Program (July 12-August 9)

  • •Assist in all aspects of the Window Decor program, transforming approximately five storefront windows downtown with new and creative displays:
  • Prepare design ideas/precedents
  • Present/meet with businesses
  • Source products
  • Install new displays

•Other related duties as may be assigned by the Manager, Image and Transportation.
