The use of active forms of transportation helps to contribute to the vibrancy of the downtown area. The hustle and bustle of walkers, cyclists, roller bladers, transit users and the like helps to bring life to the downtown streets, not to mention the environmental benefits!
Downtown Winnipeg’s two kilometres of indoor walkways get you from The Bay to Portage & Main and beyond without stepping foot outside! View the Downtown BIZ Indoor Walkway Map here.
When you’re out and about downtown, watch for the “W” signs to show you how to access the system. Signage throughout the walkway will also help guide you.
A favourite for mall-walkers, the year-round climate-controlled walkway system connects you to over 200 shops and amenities. Stay warm and dry as you visit the YMCA-YWCA, the MTS Centre, Millennium Library, three shopping centres and over 60 restaurants.
Downtown has hundreds of bike racks, making finding parking at the door of your destination a breeze. With new shared and dedicated bike lanes downtown, plus routes like the Riverwalk, it’s no wonder commuter cycling is growing in popularity downtown.
In 2013, the Bike Friendly Business network launched downtown as a partnership between the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and Exchange District BIZ. Participating businesses have adequate bike parking available, cycling maps, a bike pump and loaner locks for borrowing while you’re there!
