Earth Day Clean-up

400 COMMUNITY MEMBERS FLOCK TO ANNUAL DOWNTOWN CLEANUP AND PICK UP 1600 LBS OF LITTER

Downtown Winnipeg – Over 400 business and community members took over the downtown streets on April 20th for the Downtown BIZ’s 7th annual Earth Day Clean-up, in honour of National Earth Day. Wearing bold, green Earth Day aprons, volunteers arrived in droves to make our corner of the earth a little bit greener. With two start times and two locations, the cleanup covered even more of the downtown in 2012, from Higgins and Main Street all the way south to Carlton Street. Volunteers picked up approximately 1600 lbs of litter and garbage.

Downtown business workers and residents joined the BIZ’s Metro Enviro-Team and staff at the Thunderbird House (715 Main Street) and Japanese Gardens (165 Carlton Street) to pick-up litter, making our downtown streets clean and vibrant.

Volunteers received free coffee and donuts from Tim Hortons, a fun and colorful apron, cleaning supplies, and lunch provided by Garbonzo`s Pizza Pub. Some lucky volunteers also won bikes and gift cards, courtesy of Tim Hortons. Keeping with the green theme, the first 150 participants at each location also received a free Tim Hortons travel mug.

“I’m overwhelmed by the amount of volunteers that took part in today’s cleanup,” said Stefano Grande, Downtown BIZ executive director. “The BIZ is committed to a ‘clean and green’ downtown and wanted to show we’re committed to this community. We’re beyond thrilled that the community has responded so positively, in wanting to keep their downtown beautiful and clean! This event shows how much Winnipeggers care about their downtown.”

About the Earth Day Clean-up

The 7th annual Earth Day Clean-up event is organized by the Downtown BIZ to encourage downtown business people to take ownership of their neighbourhood. The event is part of the BIZ’s overall efforts to clean downtown, which sees members of the Metro Enviro-Team vacuuming up litter, removing graffiti, removing posters, power washing bus shelters and sweeping sidewalks.

About the Downtown BIZ Metro Enviro-Team

Downtown cleanliness is a priority for the Downtown BIZ, which has 20 Metro Enviro-Team staff in the summer and 13 staff in the winter. The Metro Enviro-Team is dedicated to litter removal, sidewalk sweeping, flower watering and tending, cleaning bus shelters, graffiti removal, poster removal and more. Portage and Graham Avenue are sidewalk vacuumed every weekday morning before 9am. The city and Siloam Mission’s Mission: Off the Streets Team (MOST) also add to the positive clean-and-green efforts downtown.
