Downtown Crosswalks to be Painted to Celebrate Canada 150 and the 2017 Canada Summer Games

 DOWNTOWN CROSSWALKS TO BE PAINTED TO CELEBRATE CANADA 150 AND THE 2017 CANADA SUMMER GAMES

WHAT: From June 24th through to the end of summer (or as long as it will last), Downtown Winnipeg will feature five Portage Avenue crosswalks with Canada-themed painted artwork. The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is launching this public art installation to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary, and to continue the celebration through to the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

Building on the success of many visual enhancements along downtown’s major streets, each crosswalk design honours the diverse natural landscape of Canada, with themes including a prairie wildflower field, a maple tree forest and a salmon run. The artwork will be achieved with stencils and high-quality road paint, and will be installed by an enthusiastic group of Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and City of Winnipeg employees.

The media is invited to attend the crosswalk paintings at several downtown crosswalks on June 24th.

WHERE: Street paintings will occur at the following crosswalks:

  • Portage Avenue @ Balmoral Street
  • Portage Avenue @ Vaughan Street
  • Portage Avenue @ Edmonton Street
  • Portage Avenue @ Donald Street
  • Portage Avenue @ Fort Street

WHEN:  June 24, 2017 starting at Portage Avenue @ Balmoral street at 7:00 a.m. (weather permitting)

WHY: The goal of the downtown crosswalks is to display Canada’s diverse landscapes as we get ready to celebrate Canada 150 and welcome over 20,000 people to our city for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.
