Busk Off Heats Up

Portage Avenue Alive Program Makes Urban Core Vibrant with Street Festivals, Summer Giveaways and Buskers

Downtown Winnipeg – Downtown Winnipeg is heating up this summer, especially on Portage Avenue, our city’s most iconic thoroughfare, that will see numerous fun activities fill the street – starting with the Downtown BIZ’s annual Portage Avenue Alive Busk Off, scheduled Thursday, June 14th from 11am to 2pm – where artisans/musicians compete for cash prizes, winners selected by public vote at BIZ kiosks located along the avenue.

Dance, juggle, sing, rap, skat or show us your skills to win. The People’s Choice Busker Award will be announced at 3pm: 1st Place: $500, 2nd Place: $250 and 3rd Place: $100. In case of rain, the Busk Off will be postponed to Thursday, June 21st.

“Our annual Busk Off is part of Portage Avenue Alive, an initiative from the Downtown BIZ that ties together programming from busking to street festivals and sidewalk sale to hockey game-day activities, all on Portage Avenue between Spence to Main Street,” said Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown BIZ. “With thousands of people coming downtown, we’re putting our best foot forward, making our downtown fun, vibrant and a hip place to enjoy.”

The busking competition welcomes any Manitoban entertainer. Walk-ups must register with BIZ staff stationed at kiosks on the sidewalk or they can pre-register by contacting 958-4640 or info@downtownwinnipegbiz.com. After registering, BIZ staff will position buskers along Portage Avenue where they will compete.
