In 2015, The Alt Hotel won the Downtown BIZ Award for New Downtown Landmark. The New Downtown Landmark Award for The Alt Hotel comes fresh off the heels of it being named the place to stay in Winnipeg as part of the National Geographic’s Top 20 Best Trips in 2016. In it, the article called the Alt “arguably the coolest recent addition to downtown.”
While it’s part of a grander Centrepoint development scheme, the Alt Hotel has already undoubtedly carved its presence as a Portage Avenue landmark.
With its clean, modern design climbing 15 storeys high in downtown Winnipeg, well-matched restaurant and office space tenants, and affordable, no-frills-chic approach to hospitality, the Alt by Group Germain has found a home to stay in downtown Winnipeg.
“We had been looking at the Winnipeg market for quite some time and our aim was to find the right location with the right partners,” says Alt Hotel general manager, Laurie Barkman.
“We believe strongly in urban locations and in this particular case, the investment in the S.H.E.D. district was key to convince us to move ahead with this project.”
Among its no-frills, practical approach to hospitality is no valet, doorman or room service – instead, The Alt offers an overachieving front desk staff, and a consistently low rate to visitors that doesn’t spike during peak times.
This minimalist approach extends to its aesthetic; each room’s furniture and décor is sparing though ultramodern, functional and attractive.
The established Alt concept is accented with local flavour with art by Cliff Eyland featured in its rooms, and a collage of Winnipeg iconography from local photographer Bryan Scott greets you in the lobby. Contemplative furniture designs also dot the lobby, offering a subversive, gallery-like experience.
From its heating to its products, The Alt uses eco-friendly practices akin to the building’s design – wide-spanning windows allow natural light and heat to pour in. Each room’s lights also flick on when you open the door, and go off two minutes after you’ve left.
All of the energy savings translate into financial savings, which help keep the Alt’s fees low. The Alt Hotel’s aim was to offer a high-value, low-cost experience to the thousands of annual visitors who look to stay next to their downtown destinations.
“The return of the Winnipeg Jets, the RBC Convention Centre expansion and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights have created a strong foundation for an exciting new phase of Winnipeg’s downtown – and we are thrilled be the first high-rise hotel to open downtown in decades,” says Barkman.
