What the downtown really needs

Development priorities for downtown Winnipeg are still upside-down.

A year after the SHED planning was revealed — designating the downtown blocks between Portage Avenue and Broadway a sports, hospitality and entertainment district — the “Big Idea” for developing the two vacant MPIC parking lots south of Graham Avenue also includes no residential space.

Hungry for Core Grocer

The search is heating up for a replacement for the latest Zellers store to bite the dust — the outlet in the basement of the downtown Hudson’s Bay Co. store.
The downtown Zellers closed its doors on Sunday, leaving area residents with just one full-service grocery store — the Family Foods outlet at the corner of Broadway and Donald Street.

Jets Effect Heats Up

The memorable motto from Field of Dreams, urging Kevin Costner’s film character to build a baseball diamond on his Iowa farm, could just as easily describe Mark Chipman’s vision. More than a decade ago, the chief executive officer of True North Sports and Entertainment proposed building an arena in downtown Winnipeg.
