DOWNTOWN BIZ & MEC PARTNERSHIP TO LAUNCH 2013 BIKE PATROL FOR DOWNTOWN
Downtown Winnipeg – A partnership between the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) will kick off the 2013 bike patrol program for downtown, as announced today at a press conference, which saw 10 Downtown Watch dressed in full uniform, showcasing their bikes on Portage Avenue. Whether it’s a large event at a hotel or restaurant, a function at the Art Gallery or Convention Centre, a sold out show or Jets game at the MTS Centre – this partnership will help enhance the BIZ’s bike patrol presence and provide an extra sense of safety and welcome downtown.
“Safety remains the top priority for downtown businesses,” said Stefano Grande, executive director of the Downtown BIZ. “The BIZ works hard to establish new programs and partnerships to respond to this need. We thank MEC for helping us launch our downtown security from patrols on two feet to two wheels.”
MEC’s partnership with the BIZ will enhance our existing bike patrol program by offering discounted rates on bikes including Ghost Bikes exclusive to MEC, accessories including helmets, cycling shoes, lights, bike locks, and more – in addition to free labour on tune-ups and maintenance training.
“We value the efforts of the BIZ’s bike patrol and are honoured to support them,” said Krista Robinson, manager of Mountain Equipment Co-op. “This is another tool that will help keep our downtown safe.”
The Downtown Watch Bike Patrol cruise throughout downtown, keeping an eye on The Forks and all corners of our core. Bike Patrols also keep an eye on Millennium Library Park and ride inside downtown’s parkades. They operate from 8am-midnight until the end of May and from 8am-4am from June 1 to August 31.
